Advocacy
Contact with members of the University Student Council, a national voice through the LSVb, and a direct line to the executive board (CvB) of the VU.
What we're fighting for →We fight for good education, affordable housing and student wellbeing, and we help you personally when something goes wrong with your studies.
Free, independent, run by students.
The SRVU rests on advocacy, service and development. Everything we do sits on one of these three.
Contact with members of the University Student Council, a national voice through the LSVb, and a direct line to the executive board (CvB) of the VU.
What we're fighting for →Free legal advice, our student desk, the exchange market and the menstrual cabinet. Practical help, no appointment needed.
Get legal advice →A better university, and better facilities, plus a year on our board or a committee that teaches you more than any minor.
Board & committees →A negative BSA, a dispute with the Examination Board, DUO trouble or a landlord who won't listen. Our legal aid team helps VU students for free.
Three students dedicating a year of their studies to representing you. Come visit us in the StudentenD0k, we'd love to meet you!

Every member makes our voice at the negotiating table louder. Sign up in thirty seconds and we'll only email you when it matters.
Advocacy, service and development. It sounds like policy language. In practice it means someone is in the room when decisions about your degree get made.
Advocacy happens through our contacts at the University Student Council (USR), or directly with the Executive Board (CvB) of the VU. Nationally we work through the Dutch National Student Union (LSVb).
And when the formal route stalls, we campaign: petitions, actions and press, together with students and staff.
Free legal advice on education, tenancy and employment law. A student desk for every question that doesn't fit anywhere else. An exchange market and a menstrual cabinet in the Studentendok.
Go to legal advice →We push the university towards optimal facilities, and we give students room to grow: a board year, a committee seat, or a first campaign of your own.

Education, tenancy and employment law. A negative BSA, a fight with the Examination Board, trouble with DUO or a landlord who won't fix the mould. We look at it with you.

It's free. For every student at the VU, member or not.
Give us up to two weeks. Our team are students too, so they'll get back to you within two weeks, usually sooner.
Write it all down. Explain the problem, add dates and any letters or emails you've already had. It saves a round trip.
Deadline soon? Say so in the subject line. Appeal windows are short and we'll prioritise.
Wins, setbacks and the occasional protest. Updates from the council, the campaigns and the Studentendok.
Do you have what it takes to stand up for VU students for a year, for good education, affordable housing and student wellbeing? A board year might be something for you!
Send an email to socosrvu@gmail.com with three things: a letter explaining why you're applying and what makes you a good fit, your CV, and optionally the position you'd prefer (general board member, chair, vice-chair, secretary or treasurer).
Not sure yet? Drop by the Studentendok, or reach out via WhatsApp or Instagram!
A lighter commitment, same union. Pick the one that sounds like you.

The SRVU has represented students at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam since 1947. As the representative of VU students we're there for everyone, member or not, to stand up for their interests.
Alongside that we provide services, push the university forward and give students room to develop themselves. The SRVU stands for more than just studying.
Room 0D-03, in the main building (HG). Come by and knock, we're often here all weekdays between 11:00 and 17:00.

Members meet bimonthly for General Member Meetings (GMMs) to set the course for the SRVU's work. General Members can also join our Committees, to contribute directly to the union's work.
The Board is voted in at the start of each academic year. These members assure the daily functioning of the union, interact with other organisations and facilitate the work of the Committees.
The SRVU is a member of the Dutch National Student Union (LSVb), a federation which includes local student unions from many other cities. Through the LSVb we have direct contact with the Dutch government, much more influence on individual universities and the ability to work together with other unions on issued we might share.
We're in the D0K wing of the VU main building, usually every weekday from 11:00 to 17:00.
